Genesis: The flood and the covenant

Noah walks with God in a generation filled with violence. At God’s command he builds the ark, brings his family and the appointed creatures inside, and waits while the waters rise over the land. The flood and the covenant

By Noah’s generation, violence has filled the earth and corrupted the life God made good. The flood is presented as a terrible undoing of creation, with the ordered world returning beneath the waters. God preserves Noah, his household, and representatives of the animals in the ark, then causes the waters to recede and the dry land to appear again. Afterward, God establishes a covenant with every living creature and sets the rainbow as its sign. The story offers both warning and hope: evil destroys, but God remains committed to preserving life and sustaining the world.

Why this matters

Genesis 6:9–7:24

Genesis 6 connects the flood to a world saturated with violence and corruption, not to divine impatience. Noah finds grace and responds with costly obedience before he can see the outcome. The ark preserves life while judgment exposes what unchecked human evil does to God’s world.
