Rebekah and Jacob deceive the aging Isaac so that Jacob receives the blessing intended for Esau. Esau plans revenge, and Jacob flees. Alone at Bethel, Jacob dreams of a stairway joining earth and heaven. God repeats the promises of land, descendants, presence, and blessing, and Jacob marks the place with a stone.

Jacob becomes Israel

Jacob begins as a grasping younger brother who exploits Esau’s hunger and receives Isaac’s blessing through deception. Forced to flee, he encounters God at Bethel and discovers that the covenant promise travels with him. Years under Laban expose Jacob to the same manipulation he once practiced. On the journey home, he prepares to meet Esau and spends a night wrestling with a mysterious man. Wounded but blessed, Jacob receives the name Israel. His story does not erase failure, but it shows God transforming a fearful deceiver into the father of a covenant people.

Jacob receives the blessing through deception and must flee the consequences. At Bethel, God meets him before he has repaired the damage and repeats the covenant promises. Grace does not call the deception good. It begins a long process in which Jacob will be confronted, disciplined, and changed.
