The fracture spreads

The serpent turns trust into suspicion by suggesting that God is withholding what humanity needs. The man and woman take the forbidden fruit, hide from one another and from God, and discover that grasping autonomy produces shame, blame, pain, and exile. Outside Eden, Cain’s jealousy becomes murder, and violence grows through his descendants. Yet judgment is not the only word. God seeks the hiding pair, clothes them, preserves their lives, and continues the human family. Genesis holds together the seriousness of rebellion and the persistence of divine mercy.
