On the seventh day God rests, blessing and setting apart the day. The story then draws close to the man formed from dust and placed in Eden to tend it. God gives a generous provision and one clear boundary, then forms the woman as the man’s corresponding companion. Their life begins with work, trust, unity, and no shame.

Creation and human calling

Genesis begins with God, not with chaos, chance, or a struggle among rival gods. God speaks light, land, living creatures, and humanity into an ordered creation that he calls good. The man and woman receive life as a gift, share the calling to bear God’s image, and are placed in a garden where work, worship, relationship, and responsibility belong together. The opening chapters establish the Bible’s foundation: creation belongs to God, human life carries sacred worth, and the world was made for communion between God, people, and the rest of creation.

Genesis 2:1–25

Genesis 2 shows human life close up: work, moral boundaries, companionship, marriage, and rest. The garden is both gift and responsibility. The command concerning the tree shows that freedom is meant to live inside trust, and that people receive wisdom from God.
