2 Kings, Fire in the Whirlwind
2 Kings
The fire rose into heaven
But the hearts below grew cold
The mantle fell where the Jordans split
A prophet rose where the fire had lifted
Oil still flowed in the empty jar
Life came back from the edge of dark
A soldier washed in the river low
Pride went down and his skin was whole
The mountains burned with an unseen flame
But the kings still bowed to foreign names
You would not listen, though the fire still spoke
You would not turn, though the heavens broke
The prophets cried out, but your heart stayed stoned
And the kingdom fell, when you stood alone
Samaria fell to a foreign hand
Israel scattered from the promised land
Hezekiah prayed with the letter spread
And the Lord still answered what he said
Then the scroll was found in the house of prayer
Josiah trembled and tore what he wore
He called the people back to the law
But the wound was deeper than before
The walls came down, the temple burned
All that was given was overturned
Ash in the sky, chains on the road
The city of David
Reap what was sown
