Morning shattered under lightning,
A thick cloud folded down.
A trumpet rose beyond all breathing,
And terror seized the ground.
Smoke climbed up like furnace columns,
Fire crowned the stone.
The whole mountain shook beneath them,
Yet Moses faced the call.
The people drew back from the border,
No flesh would cross that line.
Then from the summit came the summons,
Come upward through the fire.
The mountain trembled, the heavens roared,
Fire came down before the LORD.
The trumpet thundered louder still,
And Moses climbed the burning hill.
Through smoke and lightning, flame and fear,
He rose because the call was clear.
Sinai blazed beneath the sky,
And one man climbed where none could rise.
Joshua followed through the darkness,
Through ash and broken stone.
The path was neither wide nor easy,
Each step was hard and slow.
Loose rock fell into the fire,
The storm tore at their clothes.
Higher still the cloud consumed them,
Higher still they rose.
Behind them burned the lower mountain,
Before them blazed the cloud.
The voice that shook the camp beneath them
Called Moses farther now.
The mountain trembled, the heavens roared,
Fire came down before the LORD.
The trumpet thundered louder still,
And Moses climbed the burning hill.
Through smoke and lightning, flame and fear,
He rose because the call was clear.
Sinai blazed beneath the sky,
And one man climbed where none could rise.
Devouring fire crowned the summit,
Glory covered every height.
Joshua waited below the darkness,
Moses faced the holy light.
Six days the cloud concealed him,
On the seventh came the call.
Forty days and forty nights,
The fire surrounded all.
No crown, no sword, no army,
No strength of flesh could stand.
Only one obedient servant
Climbed at the LORD’s command.
The mountain trembled, the heavens roared,
Fire came down before the LORD.
The trumpet thundered louder still,
And Moses climbed the burning hill.
Through smoke and lightning, flame and fear,
He rose because the call was clear.
Sinai blazed, the night stood still,
As glory crowned the holy hill.
Into the cloud, into the light,
Beyond the reach of human sight.
The mountain burned beneath the sky,
And Moses climbed where none could rise.
The mountain trembled.
The fire remained.
Moses entered the cloud
Where covenant was made.
Sinai burned beneath the sky.
One man climbed where none could rise.
