Lyrics

These words follow the timed lyric file supplied with this recording.

Forty days beneath a burning sky,

The wilderness watched as the hours passed by.

Hunger grew sharp, but His purpose stood still.

The tempter drew near where the cold stones lay:

“If Thou be the Son, make bread here today.”

But Jesus stood firm in the desolate land:

“Man shall not live by bread alone.”

No hunger could rule Him, no need could command.

It is written, and darkness must yield.

It is written, the truth is His shield.

Bread, crown, and glory could never control

The Son standing fast in the wilderness cold.

High on the Temple above every street,

The tempter set danger beneath Jesus’ feet:

“Cast Thyself down. Let the angels appear.”

But faith needed neither a spectacle nor fear.

“Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.”

Again, every snare broke under the Word.

From an exceeding high mountain they saw

The kingdoms of earth and the glory of all.

“One bow, and their power and splendor are Thine.”

But Jesus refused every throne built on lies.

“Get thee hence, Satan. Worship the Lord,

And Him only shalt thou serve.”

No shortcut to glory.

No crown from deceit.

No kingdom was worth

One bow before him.

It is written, let the whole earth hear.

The tempter withdrew and the darkness cleared.

No hunger, no height, no kingdom could move

The Son from obedience, purpose, and truth.

Then angels came near when the testing was done,

And ministered there to the faithful Son.

The tempter had spoken.

The Word remained true.
