Jeremiah told the truth They burned it

God's word outlasted the fire

Before I formed you in your mother's womb I knew

your name Before your first breath I set you apart

I put my fire in your mouth And I sent you

out To say the hard thing that was breaking my heart

They will not hear you And they will make you pay

But you go stand where I tell you And you say

what I say Oh, weep for the city that would not

turn Weep for the word they refused to learn I am

the man who told the truth and watched it come The

weeping prophet and the smoke when it was done

They dug their own broken wells and they called them good

They burned their sons in the valley below the wall

I stood at the temple gate and I told them plain

This house you hide behind cannot save you at all

They beat me and they bound me And they threw me

in the pit But they could not kill the word, Lord

They could not kill it Oh, weep for the city that

would not turn Weep for the word they refused to learn

I am the man who told the truth and watched it

come The weeping prophet in the smoke when it was done

Jehoiakim cut the scroll

column by column with a cold blade And fed the prophet's

words to his winter fire I bought a field while Babylon

was at the gate Because God said this land would be

redeemed in time The walls came down and the temple fell

to ash

Everything I said would burn has burned at last But the

Lord says I will make a new covenant now I will

write my law not on stone but on the heart I

will be their God and they will be my people

Weep for the city that would not turn But trust in

the God who lives past the burn I am the man

who told the truth and watched it come The weeping prophet

but the covenant was not done Before I phoned you I

knew your name Before the smoke cleared I knew your name
