O relato tem uma longa história de leitura no culto e no ensino cristão. Muitos o consideram uma tradição antiga sobre Jesus, mesmo reconhecendo que a evidência manuscrita não apoia sua presença no texto recuperável mais antigo de João neste local. Outros defendem sua posição e uso tradicionais.
A passagem não deve ser usada para minimizar o pecado nem para justificar a condenação seletiva de uma multidão. No relato recebido, Jesus expõe os acusadores, recusa a condenação e também chama a mulher a abandonar sua vida de pecado.
