Difficult questions and responsible reading

Separate direct statements, supported conclusions, interpretations, and speculation.

Use this page with the passage open. Follow the references, test each conclusion, and return to the whole book for context.

How evidence is labeled

Explicit means the cited passage states it directly. Scripture-supported joins related passages. Strong inference follows the text closely but is not stated in one sentence. Possible reading and traditional view identify interpretations that should not be confused with certainty. Speculation is not used as a teaching conclusion.

What to notice

  1. Identify the audience, problem, argument, command, and pastoral purpose.
  2. Follow connecting words so that one sentence remains inside the author’s reasoning.
  3. Distinguish a universal theological claim from an instruction shaped by a particular situation.

Discuss and reflect

1. What does the passage state directly?

2. What changes between the beginning and end of the unit?

3. Which conclusion can you support with an exact verse?

4. What responsible response follows from the passage in context?
