[Verse 1] Under the cloud and through divided sea, all ate the bread, all drank from the Rock. Yet graves in the desert remember the cost when privilege spoke but obedience was lost. [Refrain] The cup of blessing, communion in blood; the bread we break makes the many one. One table, one body, one Lord above, we cannot drink from two rival cups. [Verse 2] Do not desire what turned hearts away. Do not test Christ or murmur his name. The stories were written to warn those who stand: take heed to your feet in the wilderness sand. [Bridge] No trial has found you beyond human ground. God remains faithful when walls close around. With every temptation he measures a door, a way to endure what you could not before. [Verse 3] Therefore flee idols; do not linger near. The table of demons has no portion here. The Lord is not weaker, his jealousy not small; choose the cup of blessing, and answer his call. [Outro] One bread broken. One body made one.

About the passage

1 Corinthians 10: The table of the Lord has real boundaries

Israel's wilderness privileges give Paul a dangerous precedent for Corinth's confidence. All passed through the sea, all shared provision, and many still fell. Sacred participation is therefore no license to treat idolatry as harmless. Paul names Israel's failures, joins warning with God's faithfulness in temptation, and then draws a hard line around religious meals: the Lord's table and the table of devils represent incompatible fellowship. Yet he refuses to turn that prohibition into superstition about every piece of meat that once passed near an altar. Market food and ordinary hospitality may be received without investigation because the earth is the Lord's. Another person's conscience can still make abstention the loving choice when the food is explicitly identified as sacrificial. The chapter ends by expanding the rule beyond food altogether. Eating, drinking, and everything else come under God's glory and the good of others rather than the maximization of personal liberty.
