Sanctify the Lord God in Your Hearts

1 Peter · Ambient House

[Intro - one question] If they ask why hope still breathes in you, what will your answer sound like? [Verse 1 - household quiet] Let a faithful life speak where argument fails. Let the hidden heart wear gentleness. Husband, give honor with understanding; both are heirs of the grace of life. Let no prayer strike a locked door. [Refrain - soft answer] The Lord is set apart within my heart. I will answer with meekness and fear. [Verse 2 - voices gather] One mind. Compassion. A tender welcome. No railing returned for railing. Bless the mouth that wounds you; turn from evil, seek peace, pursue it. His eyes are on the righteous; his ears are open to their prayer. [Interlude - 4 bars] [Verse 3 - free rhythm] Even if righteousness costs you, do not borrow terror from the threat. Keep a conscience clear enough to let false accusation fall empty. Better to suffer for doing good than to make evil your defense. [Bridge - rising] Christ suffered once for sins, the Just carrying the unjust to God; killed in the flesh, made alive by the Spirit. The hard word names spirits held in prison from the disobedient days before the flood. Longsuffering waited while the ark was prepared; eight souls passed through water. The figure is not dirt washed from skin, but a good conscience answering through resurrection. [Refrain - sustained] The Lord is set apart within my heart. Christ is risen, gone into heaven, at God's right hand, and every angel, authority, and power is subject to him. [Outro - quiet] Ask me why hope still breathes. I will not answer with a sword.
