[Verse 1] Grace to the church where the faithful stand, Faith became work in a burdened land. Love became labor, and hope learned to wait, Holding to Christ when affliction grew great. [Chorus] The gospel came in power, not in word alone, The Holy Ghost made living truth be known. From idols to the living God they turned, And through their witness every province learned. [Verse 2] Joy rose in trouble where fear might have grown, Macedonia heard what their faith had shown. Achaia repeated the sound of their name, Not for their glory, but Christ and his claim. [Bridge] They wait for the Son whom the Father raised, Delivered from wrath, in assurance and praise. [Outro - Final Chorus] The gospel came in power, and the message ran, Faith, love, and hope became visible in man. The church kept watch for the heavens to part, The risen Deliverer held every heart.

About the passage

1 Thessalonians 1: A received word becomes a sounding voice

A church can be young and still make noise far beyond its own room. The Book of 1 Thessalonians opens by locating this congregation both in Thessalonica and “in God the Father and in the Lord Jesus Christ,” then immediately points to faith, love, and hope wearing working clothes. The gospel arrived as spoken word, spiritual power, visible conduct, and assurance, while affliction somehow shared the same space with joy. The direction of influence then reverses. Those who imitated the missionaries become examples themselves, and the word “sounded out” from them so widely that Paul describes arriving elsewhere to find the report already there. Their conversion has two continuing motions: serving the living God and waiting for the risen Son. Expectation of the future does not replace present allegiance. It gives that allegiance a horizon.
