Lyrics · 2 Chronicles
The Law throughout the Cities
2 Chronicles 17:1-19:11
[Verse 1]
Jehoshaphat strengthens Judah against Israel and stations forces in fortified cities.
He seeks the God of his father and walks in the commandments.
Jehoshaphat's heart is lifted in God's ways, and high places and groves are removed.
Divine fear falls on neighboring kingdoms so they do not wage war.
[Pre-Chorus]
The speeches rose, each certain of its claim,
But certainty alone could not explain.
[Chorus]
The Law throughout the Cities, let the question open wide,
Human answers fail when pride becomes the guide.
Wisdom cannot be purchased, mined, or seized,
It comes from God, before whom striving ceased.
[Verse 2]
Ahab persuades him to attack Ramoth-gilead.
Four hundred prophets promise victory, but Jehoshaphat asks for a prophet of the LORD.
Micaiah describes Israel scattered and a lying spirit among Ahab's prophets.
Jehoshaphat enters battle in royal robes while Ahab disguises himself.
[Bridge]
Ahab is wounded by a random arrow and dies at evening.
Jehu the seer rebukes Jehoshaphat for helping the ungodly.
The king travels through Judah to bring the people back to God.
Judges are appointed and charged to reject iniquity, partiality.
[Final Chorus]
The Law throughout the Cities, let the question open wide,
Human answers fail when pride becomes the guide.
Wisdom cannot be purchased, mined, or seized,
It comes from God, before whom human pride must cease.
[Outro]
The question stayed when every speech was through.
Wisdom began where human certainty withdrew.
