About the passage
2 Timothy 3: A religious appearance and a different kind of formation
The third chapter begins with perilous times and then makes them uncomfortably recognizable. Its catalogue of vice is framed by disordered love, from lovers of self to lovers of pleasure more than lovers of God, and its sharpest line describes people who retain “a form of godliness” while denying its power. The danger can therefore wear religious clothing. It also works through teachers who gain access to households, exploit vulnerable people, and remain resistant to truth even while others are “ever learning.” Against them, Paul places a pattern Timothy has already watched at close range: doctrine, conduct, purpose, faith, love, endurance, persecution, and deliverance that never meant immunity from pain. The chapter then returns Timothy to the Scriptures known from childhood. Their God-breathed origin leads directly to their work in doctrine, reproof, correction, and instruction, with one destination: a person thoroughly furnished for good works. Appearance and formation are the chapter’s competing realities.
