Many lamps burned where the brethren met, Paul spoke long with departure ahead. A young man sat in the third-loft frame, And sleep grew heavy while teaching remained. Down from the window the body was found, Three stories ended on unforgiving ground. The room that had listened descended in fear, And death seemed to finish the gathering there. Trouble not yourselves, for his life is in him, The night is not over, the lamp is not dim. Paul embraced him where sorrow had run, And comfort returned before breaking of dawn. Trouble not yourselves, for his life is in him, The Lord has not left this farewell in grief. They came up again and the bread was received, Talk continued long among those who believed. The boy was brought living when morning appeared, And they were not lightly, but greatly, consoled. No spectacle lingered, no crowd took the floor, The journey still waited beyond Troas shore. Yet one interrupted fall became A final remembered mercy in Paul's name. Trouble not yourselves, for his life is in him, The night carried teaching and mercy within. From window and pavement to table and dawn, The church was comforted and the road carried on. The lamps burned toward morning, And Eutychus went home alive.
