They came from the hill to the city below,
Eleven returned where the faithful would go.
With women and brethren they waited as one,
In prayer for the promise, in hope for the Son.
A place had been emptied by treachery's price,
A field bore the memory of blood and of vice.
A witness who followed with open eyes.
You know every heart, show whom You have chosen,
Restore what betrayal had shattered and broken.
Let one bear the witness that death did not bind.
Joseph stood ready, and Matthias stood near,
Not seeking a throne, not campaigning for cheers.
The company prayed before casting the lot,
For office was service, and glory was not.
The ministry passes, the gospel remains,
No traitor can silence the resurrection's claim.
The Lord of all hearts sees motive and name,
And calls one more witness to carry the flame.
You know every heart, You showed whom You had chosen,
The breach in the circle was faithfully closed.
Matthias was numbered where eleven had stood,
To speak of the risen One, holy and good.
Twelve waited together,
And heaven was drawing near.
