Lyrics · Amos
A Famine of Hearing the Words
Amos 8:1-14
[Downbeat Hook]
Buy the poor for silver, the needy for shoes,
[Movement I]
Summer fruit waited, already too ripe,
The basket looked harmless; the word said the end.
When will the Sabbath be over for selling?
Make small the measure and make the price great.
[Refrain]
Buy the poor for silver, the needy for shoes,
Sell even the sweepings and call it good trade.
[Movement II]
The LORD will remember the scale and the hand,
The noon will grow dark over trembling land.
A famine is coming, not hunger for bread,
Not thirst at the well, but no word being heard.
[Movement III]
From sea unto sea they will wander and ask,
North unto east with no answer at last.
When truth was available, profit spoke louder;
[Coda]
Now silence is heavier than hunger or drought.
Sell even the sweepings and call it good trade.
Buy the poor for silver, the needy for shoes,
