Daniel
[Opening Command] Bow when the cornet and flute begin. Bow when the harp and the dulcimer ring. Bow to the image, ninety feet high, Or enter the furnace and surely die. [Verse 1] Governors gathered on Dura's wide plain; Gold caught the sunlight, and music became A test for the nations. All faces went down, But three Hebrew servants stood under the crown. Accusers rushed forward; the king burned with rage: "Who is that God who can rescue from flame?" [Chorus] Through the fire, They would not bend. Through the fire, Faith did not end. Even if rescue had not been supplied, They would not worship the gold at his side. Through the fire, The fourth walked near; The furnace burned bonds, But it could not burn fear. [Verse 2] Seven times hotter, the strongest men died While casting the faithful ones bound inside. The king rose astonished: "Did we not cast three? Four men walk loose, and no hurt can I see." They came from the furnace, their garments unscarred, No singe on their hair, no smoke on them marred. [Final Chorus] Through the fire, The name was confessed. No other god could deliver like this. The empire issued a word through the land; The faithful came through with no smell on their hands.

About the passage

Daniel 3: The music stops at three men who will not bow

A golden image and a musical cue turn worship into a public test of obedience. Every level of the empire is gathered, every instrument has its place, and the furnace waits for anyone whose body does not move with the crowd. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego are denounced precisely because men promoted by the king refuse the worship he demands. Their answer separates God's ability to deliver from their obligation to obey him: rescue is possible, but their allegiance is not conditional on receiving it. Nebuchadnezzar's attempt to make the punishment more certain kills the soldiers carrying out his command, while the three intended victims are seen walking loose with a fourth figure in the flames. The inspection afterward reaches down to hair, garments, and even the smell of smoke. Nebuchadnezzar blesses their God and recognizes a deliverance he had challenged, yet his next decree still uses the violent language of dismemberment. His old governing habits survive inside his new confession.
