For Such a Time as This

Esther 4:1-17

[Verse 1] Mordecai learns the full decree and tears his clothes. Mordecai reaches the king's gate but cannot enter dressed in sackcloth. Esther's attendants report Mordecai's condition, and the queen is deeply grieved. Esther dispatches Hatach to learn what has happened and why. [Pre-Chorus] The doors were shut, the sentence had been sealed, Then one brave step brought hidden things revealed. [Chorus] For Such a Time as This, the chamber held its breath, A sealed decree could turn a realm to death. Yet courage crossed the threshold of the throne, And hidden providence made justice known. [Verse 2] Hatach carries Mordecai's words back to the queen. Esther explains that uninvited entrance into the inner court carries death. Only the extended golden sceptre can spare the intruder. Mordecai warns that palace walls will not exempt her from the Jews' fate. [Bridge] Mordecai asks whether Esther reached the kingdom for such a time as this. Esther commands Mordecai to gather every Jew in Shushan for a three-day fast. She and her maidens will fast before she breaks the law and goes to the king. Esther accepts the possible cost, and Mordecai carries out her command. [Final Chorus] For Such a Time as This, the chamber held its breath, A sealed decree could turn a realm to death. Yet courage crossed the threshold of the throne, And hidden providence made judgment known. [Outro] The gate stood open after fear had fled. Justice remembered every word that had been said.
