Lyrics · Ezekiel
The Merchant City Sank
Ezekiel 26:1-28:26
[Processional Chant]
Cedar made the deck and fine linen the sail,
The merchant city sank in the great waters,
Every coast sent treasure to the merchant’s rail.
An east wind found the pride beneath the cargo.
[Verse 1]
Silver and spice made the harbor believe
No wave could undo what the ledger achieved.
Pilots cried out and the islands grew still,
[Bridge]
Nets spread on rock where the towers once stood.
The prince said, I am a god in the sea,
[Chorus]
The merchant city sank in the great waters,
An east wind found the pride beneath the cargo.
But wisdom for profit could not make him divine.
Trade became violence and beauty became fire,
[Verse 2]
The heart that rose highest was brought to the ground.
Beyond the wreck, the scattered would come home,
Security belongs to the Holy One, not to wealth.
[Final Chorus]
The merchant city sank in the great waters,
An east wind found the pride beneath the cargo.
Trade became violence and beauty became fire,
Security belongs to the Holy One, not to wealth.
