Lyrics · Habakkuk
Thou Art of Purer Eyes
Habakkuk 1:12-2:1
[Confession]
Art thou not from everlasting,
O LORD, my God, my Holy One?
The Rock appoints the rod for judgment,
Yet the prophet asks what has been done.
[Verse I]
Thou art of purer eyes than evil,
Unable to approve the wrong.
Why look upon the treacherous silence
While worse devours the less far gone?
[Refrain]
Why hold thy tongue
When the wicked swallows the just?
Why make men like fish in the ocean,
With no ruler guarding their trust?
[Verse II]
The conqueror draws them up with hooks,
Catches nations in a net.
He rejoices over captured peoples,
As though the net deserved respect.
[Chorus]
Thou art of purer eyes,
Yet I cannot read the hour.
The net is praised, the weapon worshiped,
The cruel bow before their power.
Thou art of purer eyes,
So I will not call darkness light.
I will carry the question to the tower
And keep my station through the night.
[Bridge]
Will he empty the net forever?
Will he spare no nation in the land?
Can appetite become a kingdom,
And violence become command?
[Watchtower]
I will stand upon the watch,
Set my feet upon the height.
I will watch to see the answer,
And what correction meets my sight.
[Final Chorus]
Thou art of purer eyes,
Yet I cannot read the hour.
The net is praised, the weapon worshiped,
The cruel bow before their power.
Thou art of purer eyes,
So the watcher will remain,
Waiting for the written vision
That will answer pride and pain.
[Coda]
The tower held the question
Until the word arrived.
