Lyrics · Habakkuk
The Just Shall Live by His Faith
Habakkuk 2:2-20
[The Writing]
Write the vision, make it plain,
Set it where the runner reads.
Though it waits, it does not lie;
At the appointed time it speaks.
[Refrain]
The proud soul swells and cannot stand,
The just shall live by faithful trust.
The vision tarries, wait for it;
It comes on time, because it must.
[Woe I]
Woe to the plunderer feeding on nations,
The borrowers rise with a sudden demand.
The one who collected the wealth of the peoples
Will tremble when debtors encircle the land.
[Woe II]
Woe to the house that covets an evil gain,
Building its nest far above every pain.
The stone in the wall cries out to the beam,
A house cannot hide what its builders have seen.
[Chorus]
The just shall live by his faith,
Not by the tower, the sword, or the store.
The earth shall be filled with the knowledge of glory
As waters cover the floor of the sea.
The just shall live by his faith,
While proud empires stagger and fall.
The vision is plain, and the hour appointed;
The Holy One watches it all.
[Woe III]
Woe to the city established by blood,
Laboring only to feed the fire.
Nations exhaust themselves building for nothing,
While glory advances beyond their desire.
[Woe IV]
Woe to the cup that exposes a neighbor,
Shame comes around to the hand that supplied.
Violence to Lebanon, terror of creatures,
Blood upon cities cannot be denied.
[Woe V]
Woe to the maker who trusts in an idol,
A teacher of lies with no breath in its frame.
Wood cannot answer, dumb stone cannot waken,
Gold-covered silence cannot carry God's name.
[Final Chorus]
The just shall live by his faith,
Not by the tower, the sword, or the store.
The earth shall be filled with the knowledge of glory
As waters cover the sea evermore.
The just shall live by his faith,
Let all the earth silence its word;
The LORD is within his holy temple,
And every boast waits before the LORD.
[Silent Ending]
The final woe faded.
The temple remained.
