[Downbeat Hook] He carries the lamb close against his heart, [Movement I] Comfort the road where the captive feet return, Raise every valley and lower every pride. Grass has a season and flowers surrender, But the word of the LORD does not wither with time. [Refrain] He carries the lamb close against his heart, He names every star though the nations seem large. [Movement II] Why say your path is hidden from his sight? The everlasting God does not fail in the night. They that wait upon the LORD rise again, Not by youth, not by iron, not by the strength of men. [Movement III] They mount through the wind, they run without fear, They walk through the long road and know he is near. Comfort is not softness; it is promise made strong, [Coda] The weary inherit the breath to go on. He names every star though the nations seem large. He carries the lamb close against his heart,

About the passage

Isaiah 40: Comfort begins with the God who has not grown tired

Isaiah 40 begins with comfort, but it refuses sentimental comfort. Jerusalem is told that service is completed and iniquity pardoned, a highway is prepared for the LORD, and a voice immediately reminds every listener that human strength is grass. Hope rests somewhere sturdier: "the word of our God shall stand for ever." From there the chapter expands until oceans fit in a hand, nations become a bucket drop, rulers wither like plants, and the stars answer roll call by name. That immense scale is not an end in itself. The Book of Isaiah keeps drawing it toward one wounded complaint: Jacob thinks his way is hidden and his cause has passed out of God's sight. The answer is that the everlasting Creator neither faints nor loses track. More than that, he gives strength to those who do faint. The chapter that spans creation closes with people walking without collapsing, making cosmic power matter at the scale of one more faithful step.
