About the passage
Jeremiah 32: Seventeen shekels for a future
Jeremiah 32 builds its hope with legal paperwork. Jerusalem is under siege, Jeremiah is confined, and the prophet who has insisted that Babylon will win is told to buy a field in territory he cannot presently enjoy. Seventeen shekels are weighed, witnesses watch, documents are signed and sealed, and Baruch is told to preserve them because ordinary ownership will one day matter again. The Book of Jeremiah then refuses to make obedience look effortless. Jeremiah completes the purchase and afterwards asks how it can fit the catastrophe visibly closing around the city. The Lord’s answer first confirms the fire, the conquest, and the long record of rebellion. Only then does it turn to gathering, one heart, an everlasting covenant, and divine delight in planting the people back in the land. By the end, Jeremiah’s strange transaction has become a preview of normal life. Fields will again be bought everywhere, with the same signatures, seals, money, and witnesses.
