Jeremiah 35: The cups remain full

Jeremiah 35 steps backward in time to the reign of Jehoiakim and places one household’s stubborn obedience beside Judah’s repeated refusal to listen. Jeremiah brings the Rechabites into a temple chamber, sets full pots and cups of wine before them, and tells them to drink. They refuse, not because wine has suddenly become the chapter’s universal test of righteousness, but because Jonadab their ancestor gave their family a rule that has shaped generations of life. They avoid wine, permanent houses, fields, and vineyards, and wartime danger has driven them into Jerusalem without erasing the rule they still keep. The Book of Jeremiah then uses that fidelity as a comparison. One human ancestor spoke once and is still obeyed, while the Lord has sent prophets repeatedly and Judah has not listened. The chapter never converts the Rechabite lifestyle into a command for everyone. Its focus is hearing and doing. The family that remembered receives a promise that its line will continue before the Lord.
