[Verse 1] Zophar answers by accusing Job of excessive speech, lies. The height, depth, length, and breadth of divine wisdom exceed human searching. He promises security, bright morning, and rest if Job follows that path. He identifies himself as an upright man mocked while robbers and provocateurs prosper. [Pre-Chorus] The speeches rose, each certain of its claim, But certainty alone could not explain. Wisdom cannot be purchased, mined, or seized, It comes from God, before whom striving ceased. [Verse 2] The friends are called forgers of lies and physicians of no value. Job warns them against deceitful advocacy and partiality on God's behalf. He asks them to be silent and declares that though God slay him, he will still trust and defend his ways. He asks God to withdraw the hand of affliction and the terror that prevents honest response. [Bridge] A cut tree may sprout again when water reaches its roots. A man dies and lies down without rising while the present heavens remain. Job asks to be hidden in the grave until wrath passes and wonders whether the dead shall live again. He closes with mountains falling, stones wearing away, human hope destroyed.
