When the Foundations Were Laid

Job 38:1-39:30

[Verse 1] The LORD answers Job out of the whirlwind. Job is questioned about earth's foundations, measures, cornerstone. Job is asked whether he ever commanded morning or made dawn seize earth's edges. God asks for the paths and dwellings of light and darkness. [Pre-Chorus] The earth stood still beneath the weight of awe, And every creature waited on the law. [Chorus] When the Foundations Were Laid, let the heavens hear the sound, The proud were shaken, mercy held its ground. The faithful moved beneath the word that would not fail, And every turning age would tell the tale. [Verse 2] The ordinances of heaven and their dominion over earth are placed beyond him. He cannot command clouds, lightning, inner wisdom, or the numbered waterskins of heaven. God provides prey for the lion and food for ravens crying in need. The wild ass receives freedom, wilderness dwelling, and contempt for city restraint. [Bridge] The ostrich leaves eggs in earth, acts without wisdom. The war horse receives strength, thunderous neck, fearless advance. The hawk stretches wings southward by wisdom Job did not give. The eagle nests on high, searches distant prey. [Final Chorus] When the Foundations Were Laid, let the heavens hear the sound, The proud were shaken, mercy held its ground. The faithful moved beneath the word that would not fail, And every turning age would guard the tale. [Outro] The thunder ceased, the answer still remained. Creation bowed where sovereign wisdom reigned.
