Lyrics · Malachi
Ye Have Corrupted the Covenant of Levi
Malachi 2:1-9
[Warning Bell]
Priests, this command is for you:
Lay the holy name upon the heart.
If honor never enters inward,
Blessing itself will break apart.
[Verse I]
Seed is rebuked, feast is shamed,
The face of office bears disgrace.
The word is sent to guard the covenant,
Not decorate a favored place.
[Levi Memory]
Life and peace were joined with reverence;
Levi feared and stood in awe.
Truth was found within his speaking,
No corruption bent the law.
[Refrain]
The priest's lips should keep knowledge;
The people seek instruction there.
A messenger must bear the truth,
Not sell a partial answer.
[Chorus]
Ye have corrupted the covenant of Levi,
Turned aside and caused the feet to fall.
Made the teaching serve a preference,
Used the sacred word as private wall.
Ye have corrupted the covenant of Levi,
So contempt returns upon the name.
When the messenger becomes partial,
The office cannot cover shame.
[Bridge]
Walk with God in peace and equity,
Turn the many back from sin.
That is how the ancient calling
Held its covenant life within.
[Final Chorus]
Ye have corrupted the covenant of Levi,
Hear the warning while the lamp still burns.
Truth cannot be traded for advantage;
Peace cannot remain where justice turns.
Ye have corrupted the covenant of Levi,
The people watch the teacher's way.
Let reverence return to instruction,
Or blessing withers into curse and gray.
[Outro]
The robe remained,
But the path had moved.
