Take Heed to Your Spirit

Malachi 2:10-17

[Verse I] Have we not one Father, Did not one God create? Why deal falsely with a brother, Why profane the covenant state? [Lament] Judah married into idolatry, Brought the betrayal near the holy place. The altar filled with tears and weeping, Yet worship found no answering grace. [Chorus] Take heed to your spirit, Do not deal treacherously. Covenant love is not a garment Cast aside for novelty. Take heed to your spirit, Guard the promise of your youth. God is witness at the joining; Private betrayal stands in truth. [Verse II] The wife of youth has been companion, Partner under solemn word. What God sought was faithful offspring, Lives that honor what they heard. [Middle Eight] Violence can cover like a garment, Cruelty hidden under claim. Therefore guard the inward movement; Do not sanctify the shame. [Final Charge] The people weary God with language: “Everyone who does evil must be good,” “Where is the Judge?” they ask in mockery, Turning moral order where it stood. [Final Chorus] Take heed to your spirit, Do not deal treacherously. Love is more than public wording; Faith is practiced privately. Take heed to your spirit, Let the covenant remain true. The Judge is not wearied into silence; Every hidden choice comes into view. [Coda] Guard the spirit before the hand moves; Guard the promise before the tears.
