Matthew
[Verse 1] Forty days in wilderness, Forty nights without bread. The tempter came to hunger: "Command the stones," he said. But man lives not by bread alone; The word of God sustains. Appetite would not become a throne, Though weakness crossed His frame. [Refrain] Not by bread alone. Not by spectacle or stone. Not by kingdoms bought through worship. God alone remains the throne. [Verse 2] Upon the temple pinnacle: "Cast down and prove the care. Angels surely bear the foot That falls into the air." But Scripture is not license To force the Lord to show; Faith does not invent a danger To command what God must do. [Verse 3] All the kingdoms, all their glory, Flashed from mountain height: "Bow but once, and every crown Will pass into Thy right." The answer ended bargaining: Worship God and serve Him only. The devil left; the angels came, And heaven met the lonely. [Final Refrain] Not by bread alone. Not by spectacle or throne. Every shortcut stood rejected; The obedient path was chosen. Not by bread alone.
