Lyrics · Micah
Woe to Them That Devise Iniquity
Micah 2:1-13
[Verse 1]
Woe to the hands that design in the night,
Then rise with the morning to call darkness right.
They covet a field and they take it by force,
They seize house and heritage, silence remorse.
[Pre-Chorus]
A boundary moved, a family displaced,
A name from the land deliberately erased.
[Chorus]
Woe to them that devise iniquity,
Building their comfort on stolen dignity.
The measure they bend will return to their door,
The field they devour will be theirs no more.
Woe to them that devise iniquity,
The LORD hears the poor when the powerful will not see.
[Verse 2]
False voices say, “Do not prophesy pain,”
They promise full cups while they harvest the grain.
They love any preacher who blesses the lie,
Who sings of strong wine while the ruined ones cry.
[Turn]
Is the Spirit restrained? Are his words not still good
To the one who walks upright as covenant should?
Yet garments are stripped from the peaceful who pass,
And women are driven from home and from land.
[Bridge]
Rise and depart, for this rest is defiled,
The wound is not healed by a flattering smile.
But Jacob is gathered like sheep in the fold,
A noisy great remnant no tyrant can hold.
[Final Chorus]
Woe to them that devise iniquity,
No deed disappears from the Judge who can see.
The breaker goes up, and the gate opens wide,
Their King at the head and the LORD as their guide.
From houses once stolen, from fields once denied,
The scattered return with their Shepherd beside.
[Outro]
Night made the plan, but morning revealed it;
Mercy gathers what greed tried to steal.
