Brother, companion in labor, fellow soldier,
messenger sent to supply what I lacked.
You came with their love across difficult miles;
service had names, and you carried them all.
Receive him in the Lord with gladness.
Hold servants like this in honor.
He came near death for the work of Christ,
risking his life to complete your care.
He longed for you all and was heavy in spirit
because you had heard he was sick unto death.
But God gave him mercy and mercy to me,
so sorrow on sorrow would not have the end.
I send him more carefully, back toward your joy.
Let reunion make anxious hearts light.
Courage is not only standing in battle;
sometimes it crosses a road while weak.
Receive him in the Lord with gladness.
Honor the brother returning alive.
He spent himself near the edge of the grave
for the work of Christ and the gift of your care.
