These proverbs teach the simple prudence, Give the young discretion for the road. Wise ones hear and add to understanding; Fear of God is where all knowledge grows. My child, when sinners try to lure you, Do not join their ambush for the innocent. They promise common purse and easy treasure, But they hide a net beneath their own feet. Wisdom cries aloud within the streets, Raises her voice above the crowded gate: "How long will fools despise correction? Turn at my reproof before it is too late." Those who laugh when warning still is offered Will call in ruin and receive no answer. But whoever listens dwells in safety, Quiet from the fear of evil.

About the passage

Proverbs 1: Two voices in the street

The Book of Proverbs opens by defining wisdom as an education that joins understanding to justice, judgment, and equity. The wise are not graduates from instruction but people who keep listening. That lesson is tested immediately by competing invitations. Parents offer teaching as honorable adornment, while violent companions offer fellowship, profit, and a common purse. Their promised gain is exposed as a trap whose hunters become their own prey. Wisdom then takes the opposite setting: she speaks openly in streets, gathering places, and gates. Her reproof is paired with an offer to make her words known. The chapter closes by showing refusal becoming a harvest. The complacent and the teachable may both appear peaceful for a time, but they are resting on different foundations.
