About the passage
Proverbs 2: Wisdom becomes a guard for the road
Chapter 2 turns the public call of Wisdom into the learner's own pursuit. A chain of conditions describes receiving, retaining, crying out for, and searching after understanding as though it were hidden treasure. Yet the chapter refuses to make wisdom a human achievement detached from God: the LORD is its giver and source. Once received inwardly, wisdom becomes protection. It trains the hearer to recognize two dangerous forms of speech, the crooked talk of men who delight in evil and the flattering words of a woman whose path leaves covenant faithfulness. Both dangers are roads before they are disasters. The chapter therefore closes positively, not merely with escape. Wisdom places the learner among good people on a path that has somewhere to remain, while faithlessness proves unable to provide a lasting home.
