Do not forget the teaching you have learned; Let mercy and truth remain around your neck. Write them on the tablet of your heart, And find favor before God and people. Put the whole weight of your heart on the Lord. Do not prop yourself on what you have worked out. Let Him be in it, whichever road you take, And the road itself will come out straight. Do not be wise within your own eyes; Fear the Lord and turn away from evil. Honor Him with firstfruits and possession; Do not despise the discipline He gives. Wisdom is more precious than all rubies, Long life and peace are held within her hands. She is a tree of life to those who keep her; Happy are the ones who hold her fast. Do not withhold good when you can give it; Do not plan harm against a trusting neighbor.

About the passage

Proverbs 3: Trust reaches the cupboard and the neighbor

Trust in the LORD reaches every scale of life in chapter 3. The heart is told to remember mercy and truth, the mind is warned against making its own judgment self-sufficient, possessions are ordered through firstfruits, and correction is received within the relationship of a father who delights in his son. Wisdom is then valued beyond precious goods because it belongs to the order by which the LORD established earth and heaven. That cosmic scale does not leave ordinary life behind. The chapter returns to walking, sleeping, sudden fear, a neighbor at the door, and good already available in one's hand. Violence may look effective enough to envy, but the final assessment of honor belongs to the LORD. Trust becomes visible in worship, judgment, rest, restraint, and the refusal to postpone help that can already be given.
