About the passage
Proverbs 11: The scales, the city, and the open hand
Chapter 11 moves wisdom into commerce, civic life, friendship, generosity, and household stability. The first object is a scale, making an honest transaction a matter of the LORD's delight rather than mere business technique. Speech then widens from the neighbor to the city, where mouths can either strengthen communal life or help overthrow it. The chapter repeatedly exposes reversals in ordinary calculations. Cruelty harms its practitioner. Beauty without discretion becomes absurd. Scattering can increase, while excessive withholding can produce poverty. Grain held back may provoke a community even when it is technically owned. The final sayings return to household consequence and living fruit. A person can trouble his own home until the inheritance is only wind, while righteous influence becomes a tree of life whose benefit reaches other people.
