The wise woman builds her house; The foolish pulls it down with her own hands. One who walks uprightly fears the Lord; Crooked ways reveal contempt. Where there are no oxen, stalls stay clean, But strong harvest comes through working animals. A faithful witness will not lie; The scorner seeks for wisdom and finds none. There is a way that seems right to a person, But its ending is the road of death. Even laughter can conceal a wounded heart; Joy may finish underneath grief. The simple believes every word; The prudent watches where the footsteps lead. Slow anger shows great understanding; Quick temper lifts up foolishness. Whoever oppresses poor ones insults their Maker; Whoever honors God has mercy on the needy.

About the passage

Proverbs 14: The clean stall and the troubled heart

Chapter 14 specializes in misleading surfaces. A household can be built or dismantled from within. An empty stall can look wonderfully clean while producing nothing. Laughter can coexist with sorrow, and a road can feel right all the way toward death. Wealth can gather friends while poverty drives even neighbors away, but the next saying immediately judges contempt for the poor rather than endorsing it. The chapter moves freely between domestic life, speech, planning, labor, government, and inward emotion, testing each by substance rather than appearance. Reverence for the LORD becomes strong confidence and a fountain of life, while true witness can change another person's future. The final sayings put patience, envy, treatment of the poor, national righteousness, and royal service under the same moral measure. Prestige never becomes a substitute for character.
