Do not boast about tomorrow; You do not know what one day may bring. Let another voice declare your honor; Do not praise yourself in everything. Iron sharpens iron, And a friend can sharpen friend. Faithful wounds are better than false kisses; Truthful love will hold you to the end. Stone is heavy, sand a greater burden, But a fool's provocation weighs still more. Wrath is cruel, anger floods like water; Who can stand when envy guards the door? Open rebuke is better than love hidden. Perfume and counsel make the spirit glad. Do not leave the friend who knew your father; A near neighbor helps when trouble comes. As water answers face with faithful image, So one human heart reflects another. Death and ruin never say, "Enough," And human eyes keep reaching after more. Iron sharpens iron; Let correction be a trusted friend. Know the state of every flock entrusted; Care for what is placed within your hand.

About the passage

Proverbs 27: The nearby friend and the well-kept flock

Proverbs 27 is a chapter of limits that pride and appetite would rather ignore. Tomorrow remains unknown, self-praise lacks an independent witness, hunger can make bitterness sweet, and fullness can make honey unwanted. Friendship is tested by whether correction is faithful, not merely pleasant, and a nearby neighbor can matter more in crisis than distant kin. Even a blessing can become socially disastrous when shouted at dawn. Iron sharpening iron, a tended fig tree, praise acting like a furnace, and a fool in a mortar all ask what contact actually produces in character. The closing movement turns to flocks, grass, clothing, exchange, milk, and household provision. Riches and crowns do not maintain themselves forever. The practical answer to an unknown tomorrow is not boasting about it, but careful attention to the living resources that sustain actual people today.
