The wicked flee though no one is pursuing; The righteous stand as fearless as a lion. When a land rebels, rulers multiply, But understanding gives a kingdom time. Whoever hides his sin will not prosper; Whoever confesses and forsakes it finds mercy. Blessed is the heart that keeps a holy caution; A hardened soul will fall into adversity. Better to be poor and walk in honesty Than rich and twisted through a double way. Those who turn their ears away from God's instruction, Even their prayer becomes detestable. A faithful ruler hates dishonest gain. The one who gives the poor will not lack bread. Those who flatter wealth and show partiality Sell the truth for one small piece instead. Whoever trusts the heart alone is foolish; Whoever walks in wisdom will be saved. Those who work the land will have abundance; Those who chase empty dreams inherit need. Do not hide the wound beneath the surface; Bring it to the mercy God provides. Confess, forsake, and walk the road of wisdom; Let integrity become your fearless stride.

About the passage

Proverbs 28: The poor can see through the rich person's confidence

Proverbs 28 repeatedly separates wealth from wisdom and poverty from guilt. A poor person can walk uprightly, another poor person can oppress the poor, and a rich man convinced of his own wisdom can be searched out by someone with little money and real understanding. Unjust gain, partiality, haste for riches, and family theft are all exposed by what they do rather than by the labels their actors prefer. The chapter also pays close attention to concealment. People hide when wicked power rises, sinners try to cover wrongdoing, and some hide their eyes from the poor so they will not have to see the need. Confession joined with forsaking opens a different possibility, mercy. Public and private life therefore mirror each other. Wickedness creates hiding places, while righteous flourishing, truthful acknowledgment, generosity, and wise walking bring people and deeds back into the open.
