About the passage
Psalms 3: Sleep inside the circle of enemies
Psalm 3 places one surrounded person beneath an increasing weight of hostile voices. The enemies do more than threaten him physically; they announce a theological verdict, “There is no help for him in God.” The answer comes by changing the audience. Instead of arguing with the crowd, the speaker addresses the LORD as shield, glory, and the lifter of his head. Then the psalm moves to an ordinary act with unusual force: he sleeps and wakes while the danger remains. That night becomes evidence of sustaining care before any battlefield report appears. The closing petition is personal and communal at once. Salvation belongs to the LORD, and the blessing sought at the end reaches beyond the besieged individual to God’s people.
