Hear me, God of all my righteousness; You made room when distress closed in. Show me mercy, listen to my calling; Turn my heart away from empty things. In peace I will lie down; In safety I will sleep. You alone, Lord, make me dwell Where fear cannot keep me. Stand in awe and leave the path of sin. Search your heart upon the bed and rest. Bring the offering that comes from righteousness; Put your trust in God and choose what is best. Many ask who will show us any good. Let Your countenance rise like morning light. You have placed a deeper joy within me Than full barns and overflowing wine. In peace I will lie down; In safety I will sleep. You alone, Lord, make me dwell Where fear cannot keep me.

About the passage

Psalms 4: A quiet bed after a noisy dispute

Psalm 4 moves from public dishonor and disputed speech toward a bed that has become quiet. The speaker remembers being given room in distress, challenges people who love vanity and falsehood, and turns the argument inward by calling for reflection “upon your bed.” The Book of Psalms does not let sacrifice function as a way around conduct; worship, speech, private thought, and trust remain connected. A crowd asks who will show any good, but the answer is not simply a larger harvest. The speaker names gladness greater than increased corn and wine, then closes by lying down in peace. The dispute has not been narrated away. Safety is located in the LORD even before opponents apologize or circumstances visibly settle.
