About the passage
Psalms 5: Morning prayer before a dangerous tongue
Psalm 5 arranges the day around competing forms of speech. Morning begins with words, meditation, crying, and deliberate prayer directed to “my King, and my God.” The psalm then contrasts that ordered appeal with mouths marked by falsehood, flattery, and violence. Access to worship is not claimed as a personal entitlement; the speaker comes in “the multitude” of God’s mercy and asks to be led in a straight way because enemies make the path dangerous. Their speech is pictured as an open grave, giving words the weight of lethal action. The ending answers hostile enclosure with another kind of surrounding presence: divine favor compasses the righteous like a shield, and joy belongs to those whose trust rests there.
