In You, my God, I place my refuge; Save me from the hunters at my back. Do not let them tear my soul like lions When no human hand can turn the attack. If there is evil hidden in my hands, If I betrayed the one who lived in peace, Let the dust receive my honor. But if I am clear, let violence cease. Arise, O Lord, and judge with righteousness. Search every heart and bring the wicked end. My defense is with the God who saves The upright heart that will not bend. The unrepentant sharpen their own danger; The bow is bent, the arrow set. Mischief is conceived and born as falsehood, But justice has not forgotten yet. They opened up a pit for someone else And fell into the hollow they had made. Their violence returns upon their own head; I will praise the righteous Judge by name.

About the passage

Psalms 7: A plea willing to stand examination

Psalm 7 is a prayer for vindication that refuses immunity from examination. The speaker asks for rescue from a predator-like enemy, then immediately places his own hands and conduct under judgment, accepting the consequences if the accusation is true. The courtroom widens from one quarrel to a God who tests hearts and inward motives. Judgment then becomes active: sword, bow, and arrows picture a justice that will not remain permanently theoretical, while the condition “if he turn not” leaves repentance inside the warning. The final images show evil producing its own collapse. Mischief gives birth to falsehood, a pit catches its maker, and violence returns upon the head that planned it. Praise closes the psalm because righteousness, not retaliation, governs the appeal.
