O Lord, our Lord, How excellent is Your name in all the earth. Your glory rises higher than the heavens; Your strength comes from the small and unheard. When I consider the work of Your fingers, The moon and stars appointed in their place, What is humanity that You remember us, Or visit us with favor and with grace? O Lord, our Lord, How excellent is Your name in all the earth. You crowned the human heart with honor And gave it work of dignity and worth. The flocks and herds, the beasts across the field, The birds above, the fish beneath the sea, The paths of water and the breathing world Are placed beneath our careful stewardship. O Lord, our Lord, How excellent is Your name in all the earth. The heavens speak, the living world replies: How excellent is Your name in all the earth.

About the passage

Psalms 8: Human smallness crowned with honor

Psalm 8 begins and ends with the excellence of the LORD’s name, placing everything between those lines inside divine majesty. The surprising middle moves from infants to the moon and stars, then to human beings crowned with glory and honor. The heavens do not make humanity disposable; they make God’s attention to humanity astonishing. Dominion over animals, birds, and sea creatures is real, yet every creature remains part of “the works of thy hands.” The Book of Psalms therefore holds smallness and dignity together without letting either erase the other. Human authority is delegated rather than self-originating, and the closing refrain keeps the crowned creature from becoming the center. The last word returns to the giver whose name fills the earth.
