Help, O Lord; the godly are failing. The faithful thin out among the sons of men. Everyone speaks empty words to his neighbour, Flattering lips and a heart divided in two. They say, With our tongue we will prevail; Our lips are our own, and who is lord over us? But flattering lips will be cut off, And the tongue that speaks proud things. The words of the Lord are pure words, Silver tried in a furnace of earth, Purified seven times over. His words are pure. For the oppression of the poor, For the sighing of the needy, The Lord has risen to set them in safety From the one who puffs at them. The words of the Lord are pure words. He will keep them, He will preserve them From this generation for ever, Though the vilest men are exalted. Silver seven times refined. His words are pure.

About the passage

Psalms 12: Pure speech in a flattering generation

Psalm 12 treats speech as a social crisis. Faithful people seem to disappear while neighbors use vanity, flattery, and divided intention, and the proud tongue claims that no lord stands above it. The LORD’s reply is prompted not by verbal competition but by the oppression and sighing of the needy. His promise of safety is then compared with silver purified again and again, giving divine speech the opposite character from double-hearted language. The Book of Psalms does not manufacture a neat ending. The wicked are still said to walk on every side. Trustworthy promise and a corrupt public scene remain visible together, which makes the contrast sharper: human words may protect domination through deceit, while the LORD’s words are presented as clean enough to bear the weight of the vulnerable.
