About the passage
Psalms 13: Four cries of delay and a coming song
Psalm 13 compresses prolonged suffering without making it brief in experience. Four cries of “how long” move through apparent divine forgetting, exhausting self-counsel, daily sorrow, and an enemy who remains elevated. The petition then narrows to being seen, heard, and given light before death allows the enemy to claim victory. No event is narrated between that urgency and the final turn. Instead the speaker reaches back to mercy already trusted and forward to salvation not yet described as visible. The same heart that carried daily sorrow is the heart that will rejoice. In the Book of Psalms, lament and confidence are not rival genres here. They inhabit one prayer, and the promised song has weight precisely because the unanswered questions were allowed to remain fully spoken.
