Preserve me, O God; In You I put my trust. I have said to the Lord, You are my Lord; my good is not apart from You. All my delight is in the saints, The excellent who walk the earth. But sorrows multiply for those Who hurry after another god. The Lord is the portion of my inheritance And the portion of my cup. You maintain my lot; The lines have fallen to me in pleasant places. I will bless the Lord who gives me counsel; In the night my heart instructs me. I have set the Lord always before me; He is at my right hand, and I shall not be moved. Therefore my heart is glad, My glory rejoices, And my flesh shall rest in hope, For You will not leave my soul in the grave. You will show me the path of life. In Your presence is fullness of joy; At Your right hand are pleasures for evermore. A goodly heritage. My portion and my cup.

About the passage

Psalms 16: The inheritance no boundary can contain

Psalm 16 describes security as received relationship rather than isolated possession. The speaker asks to be preserved because his trust is in God, names the LORD as Lord, delights in the holy ones, and refuses the names and offerings of rival worship. Inheritance language then becomes personal: the LORD is the portion before lines, lot, and heritage are described as pleasant. Counsel continues into the night, and presence at the right hand grounds stability. The final movement carries that confidence toward death, joining bodily rest with hope that the faithful one will not be abandoned to the grave. The Book of Psalms ends this chapter with the path of life, fullness of joy, and enduring pleasure in God’s presence, making the giver himself the deepest content of the inheritance.
