Listen to what is right, Lord; Pay attention to my cry. This prayer is not coming from pretending lips , Let the verdict come from where You are. You have tested my heart; You came to me in the night. You put me through the fire And found nothing I was hiding. Where other men walked toward ruin, Your word kept my feet off that road. Psalms 17: The face desired beyond the enemy's portion

Psalm 17 combines a bold claim of integrity with continued dependence. The speaker asks God to hear a sincere plea, examine heart and lips, and issue judgment from divine presence, yet he also asks that his steps be held up so they do not slip. Protection is then pictured with extraordinary intimacy: the pupil of the eye and the shadow of wings stand against enemies who surround him like hunting lions. Their watchfulness is predatory, while God’s sight is the judgment to which he appeals. The closing contrast concerns two kinds of fullness. Men of the world can have abundance, children, and wealth to pass on, but the speaker names a different satisfaction: beholding God’s face in righteousness. The Book of Psalms leaves that desire larger than material survival alone.
