You Did Not Hide Your Face
Psalms · Bible Songs, Classical & Orchestral, Worship & Gospel
My God, my God, why did You let go of my hand?
Why so far from my rescue,
So far from the sound of me groaning?
I call all day and nothing answers;
I call at night and I do not go quiet.
And still You are holy;
You are seated where Israel's praises are.
Our fathers leaned on You and You got them out.
They cried and were pulled free;
They leaned on You and were not put to shame.
But I am a worm and not a man,
Something people say to insult each other.
Everyone who looks at me sneers;
They stick out the lip, they shake the head:
He rolled it onto the Lord, let the Lord get him out,
Seeing the Lord is so fond of him.
You are the one who took me out of the womb.
You made me trust while I was still at my mother's breast.
I was handed to You before I could ask.
Do not be far. Trouble is close and no one is helping.
Bulls have circled me, the heavy ones of Bashan.
They open their mouths at me like a lion tearing.
I am poured out like water; my bones have come apart.
My heart has gone to wax inside me.
My strength dried to a piece of broken pot,
And You have laid me down in the dust of death.
Dogs have ringed me round;
They have gone through my hands and my feet.
I can count every bone I have.
They stand and stare, they split my clothes between them
And throw lots for what I was wearing.
But You did not look down on the suffering of the one suffering.
You did not turn Your face away.
When he cried out, You heard.
I will say Your name to my brothers;
In the middle of the gathering I will praise You.
The lowly will eat and have enough;
Their heart will live and go on living.
Every end of the earth will remember and come back.
The kingdom belongs to the Lord.
They will tell a people not yet born
That He did this.
